Thoughts on Instructional design and lesson planning

Reading this week’s topic, I had a mind that the instructional design models could apply to digital marketing and not only for academic purposes. Moreover, I did not know that academic course materials were created in a specific form but not the original design derived from an instructor. There are five major models that are utilized for creating a purposeful instruction: ADDIE, BD/UBD, Design thinking, Fink’s significant learning and ARCS.

  • ADDIE:
    • The word is an acronym for analysis, design, development, implementation and evaluation. (5 stages of a developmental process) This is a genuine model and it puts a focus on reflection and iteration.
  • BD/UBD (Backward Design/Understanding by Design):
    • This model is more close to cognitive psychology and includes three stages of developmental process. First, one needs to identify their ultimate goal and review curriculum expectations. Then outputting and applying the gained knowledge plus getting tested through traditional tests. Finally, to restate the initial goal or standard through lessons and activities. Thus, it is called the backward design.
  • Design thinking:
    • This particular model is unique in terms of instructor focusing on empathizing with the learner. This will not only draw a students attention but creativity and diverse point of view. Analyzing problem with variety of techniques and test the finalized product to solve the problem. This simple but technical process will inform the understanding of the user.
  • Fink’s Significant Learning:
    • This model is astonishing in a fact that a learner must alter in terms of their mindset (not enough informations. perhaps a learner’s characteristics). It consists of 6 components: foundational knowledge, application, integration, human dimension, caring and learning how to learn. They are simply amazing 6 different approach that allows users to become a better person and develop fluency in humanity.
  • ARCS:
    • This model is a problem-solving approach and keeps up the motivation of a learner throughout the learning process. The word stands for attention, relevance, confidence and satisfaction. I believe that this is a perfect or commonly used instructional design method in sports, although satisfaction is not 100 percent guaranteed depending on one’s mind.

From the five methods, I feel design thinking is the most intensive approach, in which users can memorize knowledge in the long run since it requires a logical integration process of internal and external ideas. However, I feel that just sympathizing with the users will not introduce them a new perspective, and thus instructor must continuously keep replying back with a question. Lastly, in the future, I am hoping to learn about the instructional deign method in different cultures or countries.

The very basic model for this week’s topic (2min video)

I like how you connected with the ADDIE process and I agree it is a very intensive approach and some students learn the best that way. Great information on this post.

Thank you, Gabi. If I were to teach in whatever field in the future, I would probably use this approach.

    Hi,
After reading though your blog, I totally agree with you that design thinking is the most complex step and also design a good project need long term study and thinking processes.

Thank you, Queenie. Indeed, designing an ideal instruction takes some time and process. However, teacher must not compromise when doing this.
