Before reading this week’s topic, the term “digital accessibility” was not clear in my head; however, after grasping the ideas and essence of equality and accessibility in multimedia, I am now strongly feeling motivated to create this blog and content for everyone. The topic is interconnected with the SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals), a blueprint settled by WHO(World Health Organization), which drew my attention. Digital accessibility should be more recognized worldwide in my opinion, in order to create an equal and diverse society.

Accessibility in multimedia means each individual should have the same level of opportunity to acquire and output knowledge, and interact with a diversity of users around the world, regardless of their disadvantage. The fundamental purpose of multimedia is to enable every user to learn about the world in a variety of ways not only by text (physical materials). As our professor Crozier states,  â€śDesigning for accessibility is not extra work. It is the work,” creating for everyone is obligatory.

The Four Basic Principles of Digital Accessibility:

Perceivable â€“ Individuals, regardless of disabilities, can input information into their brains. Examples: the movie must have captions, podcasts should have transcripts, lectures must have both voice and pictographic demonstration.

Operable â€“ Each individual must be able to reach the informations that they want without technical issues such as unable to scroll down or click whatever link without a mouse. However, I wonder how a bad wifi connections will be considered in this case.

Usable â€“ Everyone should be able to understand the content without a confuse, and thus contents should perhaps be easily translated into one’s first language. Meaning that the words and phrases should make sense in any languages. (Sounds difficult)

Robust â€“ People should not have limit to access to contents because of their outdated technological devices. I believe that the businesses should reconsider towards the morals and ethics in order to create a sustainable developing society and not just care about profits. The modern business models are profit greed that products expire quickly. Some devices need update and this cycle is becoming shorter, perhaps annually.

Overall, the principles of Digital Accessibility seem palpable; however, to make a change, businesses and governments need to reconsider their business morals and ethics since they care about the majority, people without disabilities and consumers. The silent majority needs to stand up and claim that accessibility is for everyone living in any condition and circumstance.

What am I hoping the viewer to learn from this blog post?

  • The four basic principles of digital accessibility
  • What should businesses and governments do to make next step action to build an authentic Digital Accessibility
  • The connections between Digital Accessibility and SDGs
  • The fundamental purpose of Digital Accessibility

Elements that I have changed from the original version

  • Added more images to illustrate the concepts: 17 goals (SDGs) & Someone that only pursue own profit (Greed)
  • Word choice – Some parts of my writing was not eloquent and palpable

Elements that I have not changed from the original version

  • Design and selected video – I think I have well organized informations and my opinion, clearly stating facts. The selected video is simple and easily understandable
  • Links – By clicking the hyperlinks, it enables viewer to access my source, and thus giving clarity
  • Title – Begins from thoughts as usual
  • Bolded words – Catchy + Signifies the information

I have put my effort and focus on two elements: clarity and simplicity. In my point of view, these two are profound elements in order to deliver any information to individuals. I dislike wordings that do not directly come into my head and thus chose to use simple word choice. Moreover, I decided to re-work on week4 blog to complete assignment 3 to enhance my understanding of digital accessibility, particularly the strong connection with the SDGs. The world is now putting more emphasis on this blueprint, which gives me hope for world peace. Through re-learning about the process of learning, I will continue to enhance my knowledge inaccessibility and create contents that circulate this process.
